US President Donald Trump signed a decree on Wednesday establishing a 50% increase in additional tariffs on Brazilian imports. The decision was officially announced by the White House in a statement, which explains the reasons behind the trade measure.

According to AFP, according to the US government's statement, the decision is based on a series of actions attributed to the Brazilian government that, in Washington's opinion, constitute"serious violations of human rights" and affect the rule of law.

The actions cited include alleged acts of persecution, intimidation, harassment, censorship, and politically motivated prosecutions against former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters.

The statement also alleges that Brazilian officials have exerted pressure on U.S. technology companies, demanding them to modify internal content moderation policies, hand over confidential information of U.S. users, remove certain users from their platforms, or censor specific political expressions.

These actions, according to the White House, justify the application of trade measures in response, considering that they interfere with fundamental principles such as freedom of expression and business autonomy. The decree signed by Trump increases additional tariffs on Brazilian goods by 50%, although the detailed list of affected products has not yet been specified.

This measure adds tension to trade relations between the two countries and could have repercussions on bilateral trade. The Brazilian authorities have not yet officially commented on the announcement.
