AP reporters are reporting smoke rising from the roof of the Ukrainian government building after a major Russian attack on Kiev on Sunday night.

It is not yet clear whether this was a result of direct Russian intervention.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko informed this morning that it was probably the result of a downed Russian drone.

If it is confirmed that Russia targeted the Ukrainian government building, it would be an escalation of Russia's air campaign against targets in the Ukrainian capital, the AP notes.

Russia has so far avoided attacking government buildings in the city center.

A woman and her two-month-old son lost their lives

“Yes, for the first time, the Government Office building, its roof and upper floors were damaged as a result of an enemy attack. Rescuers are extinguishing the fire. We thank them for their work. We will repair the buildings. But we cannot bring back the lost lives. The enemy terrorizes and kills our people every day across the country,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko wrote on Facebook.

Three people were killed and 16 others were injured in a nighttime attack by Russian drones and missiles in Kiev. Police reported that a 32-year-old woman and her two-month-old son were among the victims.

Ukrainian media also report an old woman who died in a shelter during the night attack.

Fires were also reported from several buildings across the city.

Russian armed forces also attacked the cities of Kryvyi Rih, Odessa, Kremenchuk, and Zaporizhia at night.

Russians launch more than 800 drones

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russians mainly attacked at night with drones, again in record numbers. The Ukrainian military claims that the Russians used up to 805 drones of various types, including their dummies, during the night attack.

The Russian military also attacked with nine Iskander-K missiles and four Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles.

"The air attack was repelled by the air force, anti-missile forces, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the defense forces," the Ukrainian Air Force reported on social media, adding that most of the drones were neutralized.

"We are recording the strikes of nine missiles and 56 attack drones in 37 locations, and the fall of (shot down) fragments in eight locations," they added.
