"I am confident that today's phone conversation led to great progress," Trump wrote, describing the conversation as very productive. He expressed confidence that the peace in the Middle East, on which the Russian president congratulated him, would help in the effort to end the war in Ukraine.
At the end of the conversation, which Trump described as long during the call, the presidents agreed that delegations from both sides would meet next week. The US delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It is not yet clear where the talks will take place.
"President Putin and I will then meet at a mutually agreed-upon location, in Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can end this 'infamous' war between Russia and Ukraine," said Trump, who plans to brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he will host at the White House, on Friday about his conversation with Putin.
In his post, Trump also mentioned that much of the conversation with Putin was about post-war trade between Russia and the United States. Putin reportedly thanked Trump's wife Melania for her involvement in helping Ukrainian children taken from combat zones by Russian soldiers be reunited with their families.
"The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is great news for the peace-loving nations of the world. We are ready," Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán responded on the X platform. On Facebook, he noted that it was another great chance for peace."And it's only Thursday!" he added.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the Russian president, who has been waging a war against Ukraine for more than three and a half years, in recent days."I had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin, but he just doesn't want to end the war," the White House chief noted, adding that he doesn't know why Putin continues the war when it's bad for him.
The phone call between the two presidents comes hours before a meeting between Trump and Zelensky on Friday, which is expected to include discussions on providing long-range US Tomahawk missiles to Kiev. Ukraine could use them to attack targets deep inside Russian territory, which Zelensky has promised will put pressure on Russia to end the war. Trump said on Sunday after a phone call with Zelensky that he might authorize the delivery of the Tomahawks.

The White House chief has long been trying to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, meeting with Putin in Alaska this summer, but his efforts have not yet resulted in a ceasefire in Eastern Europe. Kiev has repeatedly agreed to the American proposal for an unconditional ceasefire, but Russia has refused to stop the fighting.
