European Response to US Peace Plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that divisions remain over the future of the eastern Ukrainian territories controlled by Russian forces following the invasion of February 24, 2022.

Zelensky believes there are still"sensitive issues" in the discussion of the peace plan being mediated by the US."There are views from the US, Russia and Ukraine – and we don't have a unified vision on Donbas," the Ukrainian leader explained in an interview with Bloomberg.

It is worth remembering that Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukrainian territory, particularly in the eastern regions of the country, which include the provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk in Donbas, as well as the regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson, and Crimea, annexed by the Russians in 2014.

The maintenance of occupied territories has been demanded by the Russians as a necessary condition for a peace agreement, an idea that the US initially supported in a first version of the peace plan, but which was later altered due to pressure from Ukraine and its European partners on this issue.

But that's not the only point of contention in the negotiations, according to Zelensky."There is a question that I – and all Ukrainians – want answered: if Russia starts another war, what will our partners do?", the Ukrainian President asked.

This is because another of Russia's demands for peace is the non-integration of Ukraine into NATO, as well as the limitation of its military capacity.

Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, in a meeting that will also bring together the German and French leaders to discuss the new US peace proposal.

The meeting takes place a day after Donald Trump said he was"disappointed" with Ukraine's stance in the peace negotiation process with Russia.
