United States F1 GP: McLaren’s ‘one-driver team’ dilemma, Verstappen flips title race

Sunday, October 19

Max Verstappen has comfortably won the United States Formula One Grand Prix to move within striking distance of a fifth world championship.

Verstappen was never challenged at the Circuit of the Americas, coasting to victory ahead of Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.

It was a dirty race, and weekend, for McLaren after they leaked plenty of points to Verstappen by crashing out of the sprint race and had an underwhelming grand prix.

Australia’s Oscar Piastri moved up one place to finish fifth — he’s now gone three races without finishing on the podium as his championship lead rapidly shrinks.

Verstappen is now just 40 points behind Piastri and is well and truly in the mix for the championship with his Red Bull looking like a formidable force in the closing stages of the season.

Norris is only 14 points behind Piastri in the standings and McLaren faces some tough decisions in the closing stages of the season as the championship battle goes down to the wire.

Sky Sports commentator David Croft summed it up: “I keep getting reminded of that scene in Jurassic Park, two people sat in a jeep, trying to escape the dinosaurs, and there’s a T-Rex charging after them.

“And there’s your T-Rex, ladies and gentlemen (Max), and Lando and Oscar are in the jeep.”
