For months, the tariff dispute between the US and EU caused uncertainty. Now, US President Trump and Commission President von der Leyen have agreed on a compromise. Tariffs will now be 15 percent instead of 30 percent.
The European Union and the United States have reached an agreement in principle to defuse the tariff conflict that has been ongoing for months. This was announced by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump after a top-level meeting in Scotland.
"We've reached an agreement. It's a good deal for everyone," Trump said after the meeting at his golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland. Von der Leyen also described it as a"good deal." Instead of the 30 percent tariffs threatened by Trump, there will only be 15 percent tariffs. According to Trump, the EU has also agreed to buy weapons and energy from the US.
Further details of the deal are not yet known. However, it was already clear in advance that imports from the EU to the US will be subject to significantly higher tariffs than before Trump's second term began.
Tariffs of 30 percent threatened
Trump had threatened the EU with flat-rate tariffs of 30 percent starting in early August if no compromise was reached. The US president is concerned about the United States' large trade deficits with numerous other countries and regions, such as China, Japan, and the EU.
He wants to use the tariffs to reduce deficits and finance tax cuts in the USA.
