247 - A group of PT federal deputies filed a request for the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), through Itamaraty, to declare the President of the United States, Donald Trump, as “persona non grata” in Brazil, reports Igor Gadelha, from Metrópoles.
The initiative came from deputies Luiz Couto (PT-PB) and Alexandre Lindenmeyer (PT-RS), in the form of a nomination to the Federal Executive, and received support from another 20 parliamentarians from the PT bench in the Chamber, which currently has 67 members.
Arguments of the deputies
In the document, the lawmakers cite what they classify as"aggressions perpetrated" by Trump against Brazil and its institutions. Among the incidents mentioned are the increase in trade tariffs imposed on the country and the revocation of visas of Brazilian officials, including that of Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
According to the deputies, these measures constitute attacks on national sovereignty and require a firm diplomatic response. They argue that declaring Trump"persona non grata" would be the most appropriate way to signal that Brazil does not tolerate such violations.
Defense of sovereignty
"The request does not represent an act of hostility on Brazil's part, but rather a legitimate defense of its sovereignty and the dignity of its institutions," the parliamentarians stated. The text also states that"inaction in the face of an aggression of such magnitude would create a dangerous and unacceptable precedent, signaling to the world a supposed willingness to tolerate the violation of its independence."
The authors also reinforce that the measure is in line with the constitutional duty to protect the Democratic Rule of Law and the autonomy of the Judiciary.
