Israel-Iran Conflict Updates

Military Operations and Casualties

US President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether the US military will intervene on Israel's side in the conflict with Iran, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said today, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Before the start of today's Group of Seven (G7) summit in the Canadian mountain resort of Kananaskis, Merz told German television channel Welt that the US"apparently has not yet made a decision" on whether to join in striking Iran.

The decision will likely be made"in the near future," the chancellor added.

Merz spoke for 20 minutes with Trump yesterday - the second meeting between the two leaders since the German chancellor took office last month.

Trump later left the summit of the world's leading democracies early, reportedly because of the situation in the Middle East.

"Now a lot also depends on how ready the mullahs' regime is to return to the negotiating table," Merz said, referring to the leadership in Tehran."If not, there could be such a further development, but we have to wait and see," Merz added.

"This regime is very weakened and will probably not return to its previous strength, which makes the future of the country uncertain. We will have to wait and see," Merz also said in an interview with Welt.

He added that the Europeans' offer of diplomatic support if negotiations resume is still as valid as before the attacks.

"If a new situation arises, Germany, France and the United Kingdom will again be ready to provide diplomatic assistance, as was the case until last Thursday," he said.

The G7 summit, in addition to the United States, Canada, and Germany, is also attended by the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan.

Merz also expressed disagreement with Trump's comments that Russia should not have been expelled from the Group of Eight (G-8) in 2014.

"I still think that Putin's exclusion from the G8 format after the annexation of Crimea [...] was right," the chancellor said.
