Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has mediated talks between the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, and has secured a ceasefire, that will begin at midnight on Jul. 28.
Agreement
Anwar confirmed the development at a press conference after mediation talks that were co-organised by the United States, and with the active participation of the People’s Republic of China.
He was flanked by the PMs of Cambodia and Thailand, Hun Manet and Phumtham Wechayachai (Acting), respectively.
Anwar also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump had been in close contact with leaders of both countries, urging them to make peace, while China had urged both countries, along with Malaysia, to"actively promote dialogue, ceasefire, and restore peace”.
Anwar announced that both sides had agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, beginning at midnight on Jul. 28.
The two sides would also convene a meeting of regional commanders on Jul. 29, and a committee of the General Border Committee in Cambodia on Aug. 4.
Regional commitment
Malaysia stands ready to coordinate and send an observer team to verify and ensure the implementation of the ceasefire.
Malaysia will also coordinate with fellow Asean states to participate in the observation effort, which Anwar said reflected a regional commitment to supporting peace on the ground.
Both Thailand and Cambodia would resume direct communications between PMs, defence ministers, and foreign ministers.
