– I have just been informed that Trump is deploying an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, writes California Governor Gavin Newsom on X.
Shortly afterwards, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the increase in forces. He said the National Guard would assist the US federal immigration agency ICE and the police.
This means a total of 4,000 soldiers from California's National Guard will be deployed after several days of protests against Trump's deportation of migrants.
Trump has already ordered 2,000 National Guardsmen to Los Angeles. 300 of them are deployed in the city.
“The first 2,000 have not been given food or water. Only about 300 have been deployed. The rest of them are sitting there, inactive, without orders, in federal buildings,” Newsom writes.
He calls Trump's deployment of National Guard troops reckless and pointless, and says it is disrespectful to our soldiers.
On Monday, the Trump administration said it was sending up to 700 Marines to Los Angeles to help police quell protests until more National Guard troops arrive, a move Newsom has described as"crazy."
