The Prime Minister's press conference at the 89th TIF lasted three hours. Kyriakos Mitsotakis was asked to answer a series of questions, ranging from the elections, the Greek-Turkish, the electoral law, the measures he announced yesterday and the relations with his predecessors Karamanlis - Samaras.
The Prime Minister's job is a lonely one.
Responding to a question from Vimas and Grigoris Tziovaras, about his relations with former ND prime ministers, Costas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras, as well as the possibility of creating a new party, the prime minister avoided a political stance, but insisted on a human one, mentioning the premature death of Mr. Samaras' daughter. He noted that today he sees a father who lost his child. This covers everything and I don't need to say anything more, because the tragedy is very fresh, he said.
On the issue of his relations with his predecessors in ND, he stressed that the job of prime minister is a lonely one and that all former prime ministers know the difficulty of this role. He admitted that there have been political disagreements, mainly on foreign policy, but stressed that the big picture is a party that remains the only force of stability and prosperity for the country.
When asked whether these statements constitute an opening towards former prime ministers, Mr. Mitsotakis replied laconically: You can take it as you see fit.
In search of convergences
Among other questions, Mr. Mitsotakis clarified that he has no intention of changing the electoral law, insisting on the view of single-party governments. Excluding the possibility of early elections, he said that the elections will be held normally on time, namely in 2027. He argued at another point that despite the possible damage that a second term may have on governments, New Democracy remains a dominant political force in the polls.
Speaking about the consensuses, he stated that he himself attempted to tone down the public debate, because, as he said, citizens are being led to abstain. He stressed that he will attempt to seek convergences, in view of the constitutional revision, if required by the Constitution itself. Speaking more specifically about the PASoK, he noted that I accepted Androulakis' proposal for an open invitation from the Parliament for candidacies for the three main independent Authorities. I am making gestures of goodwill, but one is not enough. The PASoK is the main party with which we can agree, but I do not think that there is a similar mood.
Only by withdrawing casus belli will Turkey join SAFE
Specifically for the Greek-Turkish issue, Kyriakos Mitsotakis raised a new parameter, calling for the withdrawal of the casus belli from the table and added that as long as it exists, Turkey will not participate in the SAFE program. As he explained, foreign policy is dynamic and he himself seeks calm waters. However, he emphasized that this is done without concessions, as Greece exercises its sovereignty and sovereign rights.
Regarding the measures he announced yesterday from the Velideio Conference Center, the Prime Minister said that the government chose to put more money in the pockets of households and, as he noted, tax cuts will be visible from January 1st.
Mr. Mitsotakis referred to Israel, but also to developments in France. Regarding Israel, he reiterated that the government has a strategic alliance with it, but that Athens strongly criticizes the operation in Gaza. Our position is the two-state solution. We will recognize a Palestinian state, the question is when and how, he added. Regarding the French impasse, he expressed his concern, saying that the country is trapped in a state of no governance.
Accuracy: I will not blow up the bank
Regarding the great social thorn of accuracy, the Prime Minister said that we are giving money to families with children, through the reduction of tax rates. Food prices are in a much better situation today. Accuracy is at the heart of all our policies. Regarding energy, he emphasized that we have made major reforms in the electricity market, we took initiatives in Europe. I demand that wholesale prices be passed on to retail. If this does not happen, we have ways to impose it.
Finally, regarding the scenarios regarding a change of leadership in the blue faction, on the move, he himself ruled out such a possibility, emphasizing: You must be joking, obviously. I have not heard such scenarios. I am an elected prime minister with strong popular legitimacy, despite some deterioration.
