According to another unnamed Ukrainian official, Russia has fired this flat-trail missile against Ukraine 23 times. It has already used it twice in 2022.

During his first term in office, Trump announced in October 2018 his intention to withdraw from the 1987 INF treaty because Russia was violating it by developing new weapons. Washington claimed at the time that the range of the 9M729 missile in Russian tests exceeded the permitted 500 kilometers, a claim Moscow denied. The ground-launched missile can carry a nuclear or conventional warhead and, according to the US Center for Strategic and International Studies, has a range of 2,500 kilometers. An unnamed military source told Reuters that the 9M729 missile launched by Russia on October 5 flew more than 1,200 kilometers to its target in Ukraine.

Sybiha said the deployment of these missiles against Ukraine “shows that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has no respect for the efforts of the United States and President Trump to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.” He told Reuters that Kiev supports Trump’s proposals to end the war and that Russia should feel maximum pressure to end the invasion. He said that strengthening Ukraine’s long-range weapons arsenal would help.

Ukraine is pressing Washington to provide it with Tomahawk missiles, which are not banned under the INF treaty because they have been launched exclusively from sea, a move Russia has repeatedly said would be a dangerous escalation.

The use of the 9M729 missile expands Russia's long-range weapons arsenal for attacks against Ukraine and is one of the warning signals that Russia is sending to Europe, Western military analysts warn. William Alberque of the American Pacific Forum believes that Putin is trying to exert pressure in the negotiations on Ukraine. He recalled that the 9M729 missile was developed for attacks against targets in Europe. In recent days, Russia announcedthat it had tested a new intercontinental missile with a flat trajectory and nuclear propulsion called the Stormy Sea, as well as an underwater weapon with nuclear propulsion, the Poseidon.

Reuters reports that the White House did not respond to a question about the deployment of the 9M729 missiles. Trump on Thursday ordered the US Department of Defense to immediately resume testing of US nuclear weapons, similar to what other nuclear powers are doing. Both the Burevestnik and Poseidon missiles can carry nuclear warheads.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry did not provide details or specific dates of the 9M729 missile strikes. According to a senior official, the attacks began less than a week after Trump's August summit with Putin in Alaska. The missile reportedly hit a residential building in the village of Lapajivka, near Lviv in western Ukraine, on October 5, killing four people. Lapajivka is 600 kilometers from Russian territory.
