Washington – US President Donald Trump is deploying two nuclear submarines – because of statements by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump writes on Truth Social:"Due to the highly provocative statements made by former President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear-powered submarines to the relevant regions."
He sent the submarines "in case these foolish and inflammatory statements amount to more than that." Trump continues: "Words matter a lot and can often lead to unintended consequences."
He hoped this wasn't one of those cases. Medvedev and Trump exchanged threats on social media on Thursday – with powerful words.
Trump ranted on his Truth Social platform:"Tell Medvedev, the failed former president of Russia, who thinks he's still president, to watch his words. He's treading on very dangerous ground."
Medvedev threatens with nuclear system
Medvedev hit back at Telegram – referring to a deadly system: Trump should not forget "how dangerous the fabled 'Dead Hand' can be."
This refers to a semi-automatic command system that would launch nuclear missiles even if Russia's leadership were eliminated by an enemy strike.
Trump had previously accused the Kremlin official of using the"nuclear word" too often. The reason for this was Medvedev's sharp criticism of the US attacks on Iran.
Tariffs against Moscow
The current trigger for the verbal duel: Trump's threat to impose punitive tariffs on Russia if Moscow does not conclude a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Medvedev remained icy cold:"If just a few words of the former Russian president trigger such a nervous reaction in the autocratic president of the USA, then Russia is doing everything right and will continue on its path," he wrote on Telegram.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Medvedev has been considered one of the Kremlin's harshest spokesmen against the West. Critics accuse him of being unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Western diplomats, however, consider his outbursts to be more than just hot air—they could be a window into the mindset of the Russian leadership.
