That's what it's about

  • At the behest of US President Donald Trump, the Pentagon is sending an additional 2,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles.
  • Due to the protests against Trump's migration policy, around 700 Marines from the regular armed forces have also been called up.
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom condemns Washington's actions.

At the direction of President Donald Trump, the U.S. Department of Defense is mobilizing an additional 2,000 National Guard soldiers for deployment during the protests against U.S. immigration policy in Los Angeles. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced this on the online platform X. The California National Guard soldiers are being called into federal service to support the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) and enable federal employees to safely carry out their duties.

California Governor Gavin Newsom had previously stated that he had been informed of the move. This isn't about public safety. It's about stroking the ego of a dangerous president, the Democrat criticized on Platform X.

Just a short time earlier, the Pentagon had announced that it would send around 700 Marines from the regular armed forces to Los Angeles due to the protests against Trump's immigration policy. The deployment of the regular army within the country represents a further serious escalation of the protests against the actions of the US immigration authorities in the Los Angeles area. Soldiers are trained for military operations and war, not for police duties such as controlling protests in American inner cities.

Thousands of National Guardsmen have already been mobilized

Over the weekend, Trump had already mobilized at least 2,000 National Guard troops – against Newsom's wishes. Newsom called the latest announcement reckless, senseless, and disrespectful to our troops. The first 2,000 National Guardsmen had received neither food nor water. Only about 300 are deployed – the rest are sitting idle in federal buildings without orders.

Newsom criticized the fact that one of the cornerstones of the United States and democracy is that the people are governed by a civilian, not a military, government. The Founding Fathers enshrined these principles in the Constitution—that a government should be accountable to its people, adhere to the rule of law, and be a civilian authority, not a military government. California will defend these principles in court.

In the United States, the states normally control the National Guard. In the event of war or a national emergency, the U.S. President can assume command. The National Guard is a military reserve unit and part of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Each state has its own National Guard, which can be deployed in the event of natural disasters, civil unrest, or domestic emergencies. Their deployment against the governor's resistance is a highly unusual demonstration of government power. Since 1965, no U.S. president has taken over a state's National Guard against its declared will. (chk)
