Nicușor Dan said on Saturday that the meeting in Alaska between the two officials, United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, was a first step towards starting peace negotiations.

The President of Romania stated, in a post on the X platform, that the meeting between the two leaders opened the way for formal discussions between the parties.

He stated that President Donald Trump's efforts are aimed at stopping this illegal war and preparing the ground for a just and lasting peace.

Negotiations must take into account both the interests of Ukraine and the Europeans.

"Ukraine must decide its own fate, and Russia must not have a veto right," he wrote on X.

Nicușor Dan encouraged, through his post, Volodymyr Zelenski's initiative to take part, on Monday, in a formal meeting with Donald Trump, in Washington, as the Ukrainian leader declared.

"That is why it is important that President Zelensky will go to Washington to discuss the next steps with President Trump. It is also essential for Ukraine that President Donald Trump puts pressure on Russia to continue negotiations. We support his efforts to organize a trilateral summit, with European support," the Romanian president wrote.

Nicușor Dan also mentioned Romania's continued support for Ukraine, in this tense context between the two countries in conflict.

"Russia must clearly commit to the path of peace, and attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure must cease. Our position has remained unchanged, in support of Ukraine and the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity and reaching an unconditional cessation of hostilities. International borders must not be changed by force. Within the Coalition of the Willing, we discussed ensuring the necessary security guarantees, and the US involvement announced by President Donald Trump is welcome and at the same time decisive in the peace process. For us, maintaining transatlantic unity and close coordination between the EU, the US, NATO on the next decisions remains essential.", he also mentioned.
