Top topic Vote of confidence
As expected, French Prime Minister Bayrou lost the vote of confidence in the National Assembly. A clear majority of parliamentarians withdrew their confidence in him. The government must now resign en masse.
France's minority government led by Prime Minister François Bayrou has collapsed. The center-right cabinet lost a vote of confidence in the National Assembly. 364 MPs voted against the government, while only 194 expressed confidence.
This requires Bayrou to submit the government's resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, and a successor must be found. New elections are also possible, but Macron has already rejected this.
Dispute over austerity measures
Bayrou had combined the vote with a commitment to austerity. France is heavily indebted and needs to get its finances under control. Bayrou had proposed cuts of almost €44 billion for the coming year.
He also advocated abolishing two public holidays. This announcement met with widespread public rejection.
