Two passenger trains collided on Monday in Slovakia, near Jablonov nad Turnou, near Rožňov, a few kilometers from the Hungarian border. The accident injured almost a hundred people, two of whom are in critical condition, the TASR news agency reported, citing firefighters and ambulances.

The trains collided shortly after 10 a.m. on a section of track that narrows from double track to single track, the Slovak Railways Company (ZSSK) said, adding that the cause of the accident was not yet known. The police have launched an investigation into the matter.

According to the dispatch center of the emergency services, five units of the central emergency services and a rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene, but no further information is available on the condition of the injured.

Interior Minister Šutaj Eštok confirmed that two people had life-threatening injuries and were in critical condition. Three people were trapped in the wreckage, but Eštok did not provide further details. He added that the accident was most likely caused by human error.

Update

"I don't want to speculate about the reasons, but according to initial information, it was not a system error, but a human error. It turned out that one of the train drivers made a mistake and probably did not give priority," said Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok, as quoted by TASR.

Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, also spoke about the tragedy. He emphasized that one should be careful not to draw hasty conclusions. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery and emphasized that he hoped that there would be no fatalities in the incident.
