Now: anticipation for the press conference

Although a working lunch was expected to follow the three-on-three meeting between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Marco Rubio, Steve Witkoff, Sergei Lavrov, and Yuri Ushakov, press officials asked reporters to settle into the conference room, a sign the talks may have concluded sooner than expected.

There are two lecterns set up on the stage, so both leaders are expected to appear, indicating that the meeting could have been positive for both.

  • 2015: Putin traveled to New York for the UN General Assembly and held talks with Barack Obama.
  • 2007: Visited George W. Bush's family home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
  • 2005: Attended the 2005 World Summit in New York and subsequently held talks with Bush at the White House.
  • 2004: Traveled to the G8 summit in Georgia and also went to Washington for Ronald Reagan's funeral.
  • 2003: Went to New York for the UN General Assembly and also held talks with Bush at Camp David, Maryland.
  • 2001: Visited Washington, New York, and Texas as part of a state visit, two months after September 11.

Trump and Putin have been meeting for almost three hours: what does it mean?

While the three-on-three meeting between US and Russian leaders is still ongoing and no details have been leaked, Trump said this week that he would know in two minutes whether Vladimir Putin was really ready to reach a peace deal, and that he would walk away if the meeting went badly.

"I might walk away and say, 'Good luck,' and that'll be the end of it. I might say this isn't going to get resolved," Trump said before the summit.

Trump-Putin Summit: What Each Party Hopes to Gain from the Meeting

Emboldened by the Middle East truce and the recent agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the US president said earlier aboard Air Force One:"I want a quick cease-fire. I don't know if it's going to be today, but I won't be happy if it's not today."

Putin was explicitly evasive when asked about the possibility of a ceasefire with Ukraine, and there are other issues that interest the Russian leader more.

Yuri Ushakov, one of the participants in the three-way meeting, said Thursday that Moscow hopes to discuss enhancing cooperation"in the trade and economic spheres." Indeed, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will later take part in an extended meeting that will also include Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian presidential special representative for economic cooperation with foreign countries.

Another topic they could discuss is nuclear weapons, as the New START Treaty—an agreement to control the nuclear arsenal of both powers—is set to expire in February 2026.

Before the summit, Trump and Putin traveled alone on the"beast."

The Trump-Putin summit shows a return to an imperialist mentality

When President Donald Trump chose Alaska for Friday's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the war in Ukraine, his supporters suggested the location offered a nod to shrewd negotiation. The United States had purchased the territory from Russia in 1867 for about 2 cents an acre.

But by excluding Ukraine—as was the case with Alaska Natives when their lands were transferred—the summit has already reignited debate over what some scholars say Putin and Trump appear to share in some ways: an imperialist mindset. Read on.

Zelensky's message amid the Trump-Putin meeting:"On the day of negotiations, the Russians are also killing."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted: "On the day of negotiations, the Russians are also killing. And that says it all. (...) We all need a fair end to the war. Ukraine is ready to work as productively as possible to end the war, and we count on a firm stance from the United States. Everything will depend on this: the Russians taking into account the strength of the United States. Without a doubt, strength."

Trump and Putin's arrival details: red carpet and four F-22 Raptor fighter jets

For the arrival of the leaders of the United States and Russia in Alaska, an L-shaped red carpet was laid out—a formal show of respect for the presidential hierarchy—flanked by four F-22 Raptor fighter jets lined up along its length, a symbolic gesture of American military might.

Once they disembarked their respective planes—Trump spent about half an hour inside Air Force One, waiting for Putin—the leaders walked down the red carpet to a platform marked"Alaska 2025."

Trump-Putin: Handshake, photos, and ride on the 'beast'

Upon arrival in Alaska, the leaders walked the red carpet, shook hands, took photos on a platform with the words"Alaska 2025," and then boarded the armored presidential limousine known as "The Beast" for the meeting.

According to Russian media, it was Trump himself who invited Putin to get into his car. Putin accepted, leaving his own Aurus behind.

No other officials were visible inside the presidential vehicle, nor were there any guests who had gotten in afterward, so the leaders could finally be alone in the car, even if only for a few minutes. The meeting was originally scheduled to be one-on-one, but at the last minute, the United States switched to a three-on-three format, which includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, from Washington; and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and senior diplomat Yuri Ushakov from Moscow.

The Russian ambassador to the United States does not expect significant progress.

Although President Donald Trump hopes for a"quick ceasefire," Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev said he expects a positive outcome, but not significant progress, from the Trump-Putin summit, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Moscow, on the other hand, expects"steady and gradual progress," Darchiev said.

Yesterday, the Kremlin announced that the leaders would discuss"complex issues" during the summit, but would not sign any documents.

Now: The United States makes last-minute changes and the Trump-Putin meeting will no longer be private.

The White House announced that the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will no longer be private - that is, between both leaders and their translators - but will be joined by the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, CNN reported.

Following the meeting, there will be an extended meeting with participation from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent; Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick; and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Now: Donald Trump has arrived in Alaska

The US President spoke briefly to reporters aboard Air Force One, saying,"Nothing is set in stone... I want certain things. I want a quick cease-fire. I don't know if it's going to be today, but I won't be happy if it's not today. Everybody says it can't be today, but all I'm saying is, I want the killing to stop. I'm in this to stop the killing."

"We're not investing money, we're making money: they're buying our weapons, we send them to NATO, and NATO sends us nice, fat checks, but I don't care about that. What I care about is that last week they lost 7,011 people, almost all of them soldiers. It's crazy!" he reflected.

The Kremlin expects at least six or seven hours of meeting.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov predicted that the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could last at least six to seven hours."We assume that there will first be a face-to-face conversation. This will include the participation of advisors. Then there will be negotiations with delegations, possibly in the format of a working lunch. Afterwards, the leaders will take a break and then meet for a joint press conference," he explained.

Fri. 08/15/2025 - 2:26 PM

Alaska Governor Mike Dunlevy is enthusiastic about the summit and in favor of peace.

The governor of Alaska, proud of his state's selection for the Summit, called for it to produce"lasting peace."

From early on, he offered interviews to various media outlets and highlighted the importance of the meeting and of maintaining good relations with Russia, given that they are his neighbors across the Bering Strait.

Anchorage: the chosen site for the Trump-Putin summit

With a temperature of 17 degrees and a partly cloudy sky, Anchorage, the most populated city in Alaska, awaited the arrival of the presidential planes of the United States and Russia to welcome Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, in a historic meeting that seeks to pacify the conflict in Eastern Europe following the invasion of Ukraine.

Some Democratic Party protesters also gathered in the streets of Anchorage to protest the presence of someone who wasn't invited to the summit: Ukrainian President Volodomir Zelensky. At least that's what former Senate counsel Steven Duffield said on social media.

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's Alaska summit: Is there a possibility of a tripartite meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky?

Everything is ready in remote Anchorage, the largest city in the state of Alaska, for a long-awaited meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin this Friday afternoon to advance peace in Ukraine. But, hours before leaving for the meeting, the White House chief said Thursday that, if the talks go well at the summit, there could be a tripartite face-to-face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even opened the door to the participation of European leaders.

The meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin and their respective delegations will take place more than three and a half years after Moscow's invasion of its neighbor. They will meet at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, outside Anchorage, in the Arctic territory the United States purchased from Russia more than a century ago. It will begin at 4:30 p.m. Argentine time. There will be a press conference afterward. Continue reading in Clarín...
