That's what it's about

  • A UN commission of inquiry has accused Israel of genocide for the first time.
  • The commission says Israel has committed four acts of genocide since October 7.
  • Israel rejects the allegations as false and calls for the abolition of the commission.

An independent United Nations investigation has concluded for the first time that Israel committed genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and that the country's top leaders incited genocide. We have concluded that genocide is being perpetrated and is continuing in the Gaza Strip, Navi Pillay, head of the Geneva-based commission of inquiry, told AFP on Tuesday. Netanyahu, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and former Defense Minister Joav Gallant are responsible.

In the 72-page report released on Tuesday, the commission appointed by the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) found that Israel has committed four acts of genocide in the territory since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched deadly attacks against Israel and Israel launched its military campaign.

These are the allegations

According to the report, these acts include the killing of Palestinians in Gaza, which has caused serious physical and psychological harm to the Palestinians, the deliberate imposition of living conditions on the group aimed at its total or partial physical destruction, and the imposition of measures aimed at preventing births within the group.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas terrorists, nearly 65,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. Israel, which recently launched a new offensive in the territory, continues to justify the ongoing fighting as self-defense and rejects any accusations of genocide, claiming that it always adheres to international law.

Tel Aviv calls for abolition of the Commission

Israel categorically rejects the distorted and false report and demands the immediate abolition of the commission of inquiry, the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. It described the investigation as a report based exclusively on Hamas' lies.

The country has accused the UN Human Rights Council of bias against Israel for years. This has also been supported by US President Donald Trump, who terminated the United States' membership in the Council at the beginning of his second term.

Meanwhile, voices are also being raised in the United States explicitly accusing Israel of genocide. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley warned last week that the Israeli army is implementing a plan in the Gaza Strip to ethnically cleanse the territory of its Palestinian population, and that the United States, as its most important ally, bears complicity in this.
