Russian Military Exercises and Escalation

The Baltic countries emphasize that the Russian drone attack on Poland and other frequent violations by the Russian Federation increase concerns about overall security in the region.

This statement was made on behalf of the three Baltic countries at a meeting of the UN Security Council by the Permanent Representative of Latvia, Sanita Paluta-Deslandes, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"The Baltic States condemn the violation of Polish airspace and express full solidarity with our Polish allies," she noted.

The Permanent Representative of Latvia recalled that this is not the first or only incident in the region.

"Over the past year, all three Baltic countries have recorded instances of illegal intrusion of Russian assets into our airspace. Russia's reckless actions are raising growing concerns about the overall security of the region," Paluta-Deslandes said.

The drone incident in Poland, she stressed, is another escalation of conflict by a permanent member of the UN Security Council against the sovereign territory of another country. It is also a test for the entire rules-based international order; a violation of the UN Charter, customary international law and the fundamental principles of the Helsinki Final Act.

In this context, the representative of Latvia expressed reservations about possible further provocations in the region against the backdrop of military exercises by Russia and Belarus.

"We call on Russia to fully respect the UN Charter, and we call on it to cease its violations of European airspace and international borders," Paluta-Deslandes stressed.

As Ukrinform reported, on Friday, almost fifty countries issued a joint statement, expressing deep concern over yet another gross violation of international law and the UN Charter committed by Russia against Poland.
