247 – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva shared on his social media, this Sunday (22), the official note from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemning the recent attacks by the governments of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu against Iran. Lula's gesture reinforces the country's historic position in defense of international law, the sovereignty of peoples and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The note was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and had a wide impact due to its bluntness and direct criticism of the military actions of both Israel and the United States. According to the document, the attacks represent a serious military escalation in the Middle East and directly violate Iranian sovereignty, in addition to putting the health of the population and the environment at risk.

Check out the full official statement from the Brazilian government below:

The Brazilian government expresses grave concern about the military escalation in the Middle East and strongly condemns, in this context, military attacks by Israel and, more recently, by the United States, against nuclear facilities, in violation of Iran's sovereignty and international law. Any armed attack on nuclear facilities represents a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and the rules of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Armed actions against nuclear facilities represent a serious threat to the life and health of civilian populations, by exposing them to the risk of radioactive contamination and large-scale environmental disasters.

The Brazilian Government reiterates its historic position in favor of the exclusive use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and firmly rejects any form of nuclear proliferation, especially in regions marked by geopolitical instability, such as the Middle East.

Brazil also condemns reciprocal attacks against densely populated areas, which have caused an increasing number of victims and damage to civilian infrastructure, including hospital facilities, which are specially protected by international humanitarian law.

In reiterating its call for maximum restraint by all parties involved in the conflict, Brazil emphasizes the urgent need for a diplomatic solution that interrupts this cycle of violence and opens an opportunity for peace negotiations. The negative consequences of the current military escalation could cause irreversible damage to peace and stability in the region and the world, and to the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime.

A position of principle and global leadership

By sharing the Itamaraty note, Lula not only reiterates Brazil's historic commitment to peace and multilateralism, but also takes a firm stance against unilateral and warmongering actions that disregard fundamental norms of international law. The direct condemnation of Trump and Netanyahu places Brazil among the group of countries seeking to contain the cycle of violence in the Middle East and avoid a major nuclear crisis.

The diplomatic initiative is also in line with the Brazilian tradition of defending the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as provided for in the Federal Constitution and in international treaties signed by the country, such as the Treaty of Tlatelolco and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
