Far-right groups reportedly called on social media for a"hunt for migrants" in Torre-Pacheco. This sparked unrest in the municipality of some 36,000 residents, 30 percent of whom are migrants. Slogans like"Deport them now" were also chanted.

According to the local newspaper La Opinión de Murcia, groups wielding sticks roamed the streets last night, searching for people of foreign origin. Police were present in large numbers and managed to prevent direct confrontations. At least one person was arrested.

The mayor and other politicians are calling for calm. Mayor Pedro Angel Roca Ternel of the right-wing Partido Popular is asking not to equate the entire migrant population with criminals. The mayor points out that most migrants have come to Spain to work. The Spanish Minister of Youth condemns"the racist persecution of migrants in Torre-Pacheco."
