Donald Trump changed his position: We will have to send more weapons to Ukraine, especially defensive ones

Tuesday, July 8

The United States will send more weapons to Ukraine, US President Donald Trump announced on Monday evening. The apparent change in his position came less than a week after the US Department of Defense announced the suspension of some weapons supplies to Kiev, TASR reports, citing AP and AFP reports.

"We're going to have to send (them) more weapons - primarily defensive weapons," Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that the Ukrainians"have to be able to defend themselves" as they "are getting hit very, very hard." The US president added that he was "not happy" with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He made the remarks at the start of a dinner he had with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

The White House said early last week that the decision to suspend some weapons deliveries to Kiev “was made to prioritize American interests after the Department of Defense reviewed U.S. military assistance to other countries around the world.” The deliveries of air defense missiles, precision-guided artillery and other weapons were to be suspended.

The Pentagon has reportedly concluded that stocks of some of the promised items are too low, an unnamed US official told the AP. The weapons were weapons that Washington promised to Ukraine during the administration of former President Joe Biden, whom Trump has long criticized for his extensive military aid to Ukraine.
