Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several of his ministers renewed their opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, on the eve of a vote expected in the Security Council on Monday on a US draft resolution on Gaza that addresses the possibility of such a state in the future.

Unlike previous versions, the new draft resolution, which adopts US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, includes a reference to a possible future Palestinian state, something the Israeli government has strongly opposed for years.

“Our opposition to a Palestinian state on any part of the land has not changed,” Netanyahu said at the start of the cabinet meeting on Sunday, stressing that he does not need “lessons from anyone” in this regard. The extremist finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, had accused him on Saturday of “remaining silent” since France and several other countries recognized the State of Palestine in September.

Smotrich wrote via the “X” platform: “Immediately formulate an appropriate and firm response that makes it clear to the whole world that there will never be a Palestinian state on our homeland.”

For his part, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced on social media that his party, “Jewish Power,” would not participate in “any government that accepts” the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar also stressed via the"X" platform their absolute rejection of any Palestinian state.

The US draft resolution endorses Trump’s plan that led to a ceasefire in Gaza on October 10 after two years of war.

The draft resolution, according to a copy seen by AFP, calls for allowing the deployment of an “international stabilization force” in the Palestinian territory, and for granting a “peace committee,” supposedly to be headed by Trump, a mandate to administer Gaza temporarily until the end of December 2027.
