Israeli army spokesperson Effie Defrin has stated that they estimate it will take several months to take control of Gaza City. In a press conference reported by ABC News, she added that it will take several more months—or even longer—to clear the city of its infrastructure.

Thus, according to The Times of Israel, Defrin has stated that they currently control large areas of Gaza City.

Israel announced Tuesday the start of its ground offensive in Gaza City, targeting Hamas militants, sparking widespread international alarm. Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain there. Gaza will be destroyed, said Defense Minister Israel Katz. We want to take control of Gaza City because today it is the main symbol of Hamas rule. Today, if Gaza falls, they will fall, he added.

The Defense Minister justified the operation by saying Hamas refused to voluntarily hand over its weapons and hostages. This new deployment, he asserted, is directly defeating the Palestinian group while creating a greater incentive to release those still under its control.

The UN has condemned it as a massacre. An investigation has also accused Israel of committing genocide in Palestinian territory, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials of incitement.
