The Castilian-Manchegan president, Emiliano García-Page, is prepared to use all the instruments in his hand to try to prevent the collapse of the Sánchez pact with the independence movement, by virtue of which Catalonia will be granted unique financing, in the image and likeness of the Basque quota, which will include the collection, management and settlement of all taxes, starting with personal income tax in 2026. This agreement is expected to be signed next Monday.
Page considers this agreement,"absolutely serious," to be "a privilege resulting from blackmail" and a definitive example of the "permanent escalation of concessions" in which Pedro Sánchez's government has engaged since day one. In his opinion, a definitive line has been crossed that paves the way for the"looting" of the state.
The Socialist baron has revealed that he himself requested that the issue of regional financing be debated in the Federal Committee, but that this request was"deliberately hidden." Furthermore, he has asserted that the agreement with the pro-independence parties, which will be signed on Monday,"was delayed so that it wouldn't be debated in the Committee." "It seems," he insisted,"that the pro-independence parties were on the Federal Committee." Page has decided to make all this public after discovering that some audio recordings of what happened within the Socialist conclave last weekend were leaked.
In his opinion, what the agreement on the Catalan quota demonstrates is that"more corruption means more weakness and more business for the separatists and their allies; more corruption means more concessions and more free rein." The president of Castilla-La Mancha, the most vocal critic of Sánchez's policies, laments that the left is thus violating"its most sacred principle, which is equality."
"Everything," he added,"is becoming indefensible. And the most regrettable thing is that we have important political leaders defending the indefensible. And they call themselves leftists. That's where we are."
García Page has always expressed his opposition to concessions to the independence movement, which, in his opinion, have been nothing more than"blackmail from day one." Now, however, the problem has escalated to the point of taking on the appearance of"an even greater plunder."
"The limits, which, unfortunately, for the government were already very few, have been completely undone," he declared before calling the pact, which will be finalized on Monday,"absolutely absurd" and hoping that, in the end,"it will not go ahead." For the president of Castilla-La Mancha, this is a clearly unconstitutional agreement. He emphasizes:"At this point, the Constitution matters only a little to some."
Although he has not yet wanted to reveal the steps that his Executive will take to try to stop the pact, it is evident that it will find the support of the majority of the autonomous communities: the also socialist Asturias, plus all those of the PP, who have already expressed their strong opposition to an agreement that privileges Catalonia by separating it from the common regime and granting it an exceptional model that the Magna Carta only recognizes for the Basque Country and Navarre.
The First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, pledged this Friday not to promote"any agreement or policy that constitutes territorial grievance with other parts of our territory" and "other autonomous communities."
This was stated at a press conference in Seville, in response to questions from journalists about the meeting scheduled for this coming Monday, July 14, of the Bilateral Commission between the Government and the Generalitat of Catalonia and the proposal for special funding for Catalonia.
In this regard, the vice president began by saying that"as long as there is a socialist at the head of the Spanish government, and a socialist, in this case a woman, at the head of the Ministry of Finance, the Spanish government will never, ever promote any agreement or policy that constitutes territorial grievances against other parts of our territory, other autonomous communities, other sensibilities, or another way of understanding autonomy."
