A shooting at the US military base at Fort Stewart in Georgia has left at least five people injured, according to authorities, and the base has been placed on lockdown."The facility was placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on scene," Fort Stewart said in a Facebook post, adding that the incident took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area and that casualties had been reported.
The attacker has already been arrested. The soldiers were immediately treated by the base's medical staff and then transferred to Winn Army Hospital for further treatment.
No further information is immediately available, Reuters reports. A Liberty County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the agency was assisting with the response at Fort Stewart, but referred all questions to the U.S. Army.
President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting and is closely monitoring the situation, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on X that he and his family are"saddened by today's tragedy" at the base."We hold the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask all Georgians to do the same," he added. Fort Stewart is about 220 miles southeast of Atlanta.
