JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani claims that the House of Representatives will continue to improve and listen to the aspirations of the people.
This was conveyed by Puan in response to the incident where a Brimob Polri tactical vehicle (rantis) ran over an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver, Affan Kurniawan, to his death on Thursday (28/8/2025).
"The Indonesian House of Representatives will continue to improve by listening to the people's aspirations," said Puan in a video statement, Friday (29/8/2025).
The PDI-P politician said that the DPR is committed to continuing to open up healthy communication spaces in working together to build the nation and state.
According to him, they must always be self-aware and work hard.
"And we must always pray that incidents and tragedies like this will not happen again in the future and will never happen again," said Puan.
"May Allah SWT, Almighty God, give mercy and guidance to all of us," he added.
Meanwhile, Puan also expressed deep concern over the violence experienced by demonstrators while expressing their aspirations.
"On behalf of all members and leaders of the DPR RI, we apologize if we have not been able to fully carry out our duties as representatives of the people," said Puan.
Big demo
Large demonstrations took place in several regions this week, allegedly triggered by news of housing allowances and fantastic incomes for members of the House of Representatives.
Public criticism of the allowance was then responded to by a number of DPR members in ways that actually received a negative response from the public.
Demonstrations were also held in several areas, including Jakarta on Monday (25/8/2025) and Thursday (28/8/2025).
The situation became even more complicated after a Brimob armored vehicle ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, on Thursday night.
On Friday, demonstrations spread to a number of areas, including the DPR Building, the Metro Jaya Regional Police Headquarters, and the Metro Jaya Regional Police Mobile Brigade Headquarters.
