Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with US President Donald Trump to discuss ongoing trade negotiations and congratulate him on the successful Gaza peace deal.

Sharing the details of their conversation on X, PM Modi said both leaders reviewed progress on bilateral trade talks and agreed to remain in close contact in the coming weeks.

“Spoke to my friend, President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks," Prime Minister Modi wrote.

This was the second phone call between the two leaders in less than a month. Their first call was on 17 September, when Trump called PM Modi to wish him a happy birthday.

PM Modi was among several world leaders who welcomed the ceasefire announcement, calling it a positive step towards peace in the region. The deal could mark the beginning of the end of the war in Gaza, which started in October 2023.

After speaking with Trump, PM Modi also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a post on X, Modi wrote: “Called my friend, Prime Minister Netanyahu, to congratulate him on the progress made under President Trump’s Gaza peace plan. We welcome the agreement on the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. Reaffirmed that terrorism in any form or manifestation is unacceptable anywhere in the world."

The new Gaza ceasefire agreement is based on Trump’s 20-point peace plan and includes the release of 47 hostages held by Hamas — 25 of whom are believed to be dead — in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. It also ensures a daily supply of aid trucks into Gaza and the return of displaced residents to the north. Israeli troops will withdraw in phases, with international guarantees reportedly supported by Trump.

The ceasefire is expected to take effect within 24 hours of Israeli cabinet approval, with hostage releases planned to begin 72 hours later.
