Norwegian Nobel Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes said there is uncertainty about whether Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado will be able to travel to Oslo on December 10 to receive the prize due to the delicate security situation.

“We always look forward to welcoming the laureates to Oslo, but there is a serious security situation that needs to be resolved first,” Frydnes told reporters.

The statement comes as Machado remains in hiding after denouncing fraud in the presidential elections and facing persecution from Nicolás Maduro's government.

Despite the risks, the committee believes international recognition will strengthen the leader's cause."It's one of the most difficult dilemmas when the awardee faces serious threats. She remains active in Venezuela, and we believe this award will support her cause, not hinder it," explained the committee's president.

The award was given to Machado for his"tireless work in promoting democratic rights" and his fight for a peaceful transition in Venezuela.

The award, which consists of a medal, a diploma, and 11 million Swedish kronor, also seeks to send a message against the rise of authoritarianism and offer hope to the Venezuelan people.

According to reports, upon being informed of the news in a phone call, Machado's initial reaction was one of disbelief. The committee emphasized that the award seeks to support those who defend democracy in times of crisis.
