(San Francisco = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kwon Young-jeon = The death toll from the shooting at a Jewish event on the beach in Sydney, Australia has risen to 16, including one child.

New South Wales (NWS) Health Minister Ryan Park said the death toll had risen from 12 to 16 overnight, the Associated Press reported on the 15th (local time).

Among the dead was a 12-year-old child, while three other children are currently receiving treatment in hospital, Minister Park said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) announced via X that the number of injured in connection with the incident has now reached 40.

"This is a terrible thing for the entire community and especially for the Jewish community," Park said."Last night we witnessed humanity at its worst, but we also witnessed humanity at its best."

Earlier, at around 6:45 p.m. on the 14th, two armed men opened fire at a Jewish event held at Bondi Beach in eastern Sydney.

Local police said they shot and killed one of the two suspects, while the other was arrested but seriously injured.

During this process, some citizens risked their lives to subdue the gunman and take his firearm away.
