In a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping promised increased support for Russia.
During the meeting on Tuesday, Xi said the two countries should strengthen mutual support in multilateral forums, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
Xi further said, according to Xinhua, that Beijing and Moscow should work to unite countries in the global south and promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction.
The Russian Foreign Ministry previously stated that a number of issues related to bilateral political contacts at the highest level were discussed.
Among the topics were preparations for President Putin's visit to China to attend a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the commemoration of the World War II anniversary.
China on Tuesday condemned what it called coercion by the United States, after President Donald Trump threatened very tough tariffs on Moscow's remaining trading partners if Russia does not resolve the conflict in Ukraine within 50 days.
"China firmly opposes all illegal unilateral sanctions and jurisdiction that extends beyond national borders. There are no winners in a tariff war, and coercion and pressure will not solve problems," said Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
