Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu has resigned from her party, the Republican People's Party (CHP). Having joined the AKP, Çerçioğlu stated that she has never feared prosecution, saying,"My forehead is clear, my head is held high." Following her speech, President Erdoğan pinned a badge on Çerçioğlu.
CHPAydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu announced her resignation from her party on social media. Çerçioğlu stated that she and three other mayors had repeatedly sought solutions to the problems they faced within the CHP from party officials, but were unable to reach a solution.
In a statement on his social media account today, Çerçioğlu said, “As the Mayor of Aydın Metropolitan Municipality, my three mayors and I have repeatedly sought solutions to the problems we face within the Republican People’s Party (CHP) from the party’s authorities, yet unfortunately, we have been unable to reach a solution. In addition to the anti-democratic practices that have been taking place, I no longer have the opportunity to follow the same path as the CHP due to my fundamental principles of honesty, service within the framework of the law, and uncompromising public morality, which I have provided to the people of Aydın and my family.” Çerçioğlu noted that they have expressed their demands for honesty, morality, and compliance with the law at every level to prevent this from happening, but stated that despite this, he and his family are being targeted.

Having resigned from the CHP, Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu joined the AK Party. Speaking at an AK Party program, Özlem Çerçioğlu said,"I find it completely inappropriate, in terms of political morality, to explain the problems I've experienced with the judiciary here. However, I will explain them one by one if necessary. I have only one concern: To serve my country and intellectuals. From now on, I will continue to serve under the AK Party umbrella, with you and under the auspices of our President. Mr. President, as you well know, Aydın province is a first-degree earthquake zone. From now on, I want to launch an urban transformation campaign for Aydın with your support. I wish it good luck in advance. Thank you, thank you very much."
After his speech, President Erdoğan pinned the AK Party badge on Çerçioğlu.
