International Reaction to Trump's Decision

US President Donald Trump has hit back at recent threats of war from Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev.

Posting on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump dismissed both Russia and India as economically irrelevant and took aim at Medvedev’s political legacy.

“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together,” he wrote.

“Let’s keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!” he added.

Medvedev previously served as both Russia’s president and prime minister, swapping roles with Vladimir Putin in what critics called a power-preserving tactic to keep Putin at the helm.

Trump earlier said a 25% secondary tariff will be imposed on India starting Aug. 1 due to New Delhi’s ties with Moscow.

Trump’s outburst follows a warning from Medvedev on July 28, when the former Russian president called Trump’s revised ultimatum to Putin “a step towards war.”

Trump had reduced his previously announced 50-day deadline for Putin to reach a ceasefire with Ukraine. He said he is now giving Russia 10 days to show progress, citing a lack of progress from Moscow.

Trump reiterated that Putin must agree to a ceasefire or face additional US tariffs on Russian goods.

Medvedev responded by calling Trump’s ultimatum a “dangerous game.”

“Trump is playing a dangerous ultimatum game: 50 days, then 10... He should remember two things: 1. Russia is not Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat, a step toward war – not with Ukraine, but with the US itself. Don’t follow the path of Sleepy Joe [former US president Joe Biden],” he wrote.

On Thursday, Medvedev replied again to Trump’s post by belittling Trump’s response.

“If some words from the former Russian president cause such a nervous reaction in such a formidable US president, then Russia is right about everything and will continue on its path,” he wrote.

“As for the ‘dead economy’ of India and Russia and ‘stepping into dangerous territory’ – well, let him remember his favorite movies about the ‘walking dead’ and how dangerous a ‘dead hand’ that doesn’t exist in nature can be,” Medvedev added.

Meanwhile, the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggested Kremlin officials are attempting to manipulate Trump into abandoning his 10-day deadline and normalizing ties with Moscow.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov added on July 30 that Russia has developed “some immunity” to sanctions and is prepared for new economic restrictions.

Notably, a group of conservative Republicans in Congress is calling for a major overhaul of US sanctions on Russia, aiming to hit the Kremlin’s war machine hard while giving Trump more room to pursue his “Peace Through Strength” strategy.

The Republican Study Committee (RSC), led by Chair August Pfluger (R-TX) and National Security Task Force Chair Zach Nunn (R-IA), sent a letter to congressional leaders warning that Russia is an “immediate and escalating threat” to US national security.

They say Putin’s aggression is hurting global markets and encouraging US adversaries.

Pfluger urged Congress to support Trump’s efforts to secure peace by giving him broad tools to weaken Russia. Nunn added, “President Trump just put Putin on the clock. Now it’s up to Congress to deliver the tools needed to hit the Russian war machine.”
