Lula travels to Canada today for the G7 Summit focusing on energy security and COP-30

Monday, June 16

247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva leaves for Canada this Monday (16), where he will participate, on Tuesday (17), in the 51st G7 Summit — the group of the seven most industrialized economies on the planet. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this year's debates will highlight the theme of energy security, with an emphasis on technology, innovation and the strengthening of production chains of critical minerals, highlights a report by Agência Brasil.

In addition to the G7 member countries — the United States, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and Germany — the summit will feature an expanded session, bringing together invited leaders from nations such as Brazil, South Africa, Australia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, India and Mexico.

The Secretary of Climate, Energy and Environment of Itamaraty, Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, highlighted that the issues discussed at the G7 meeting have a strong connection with the central themes of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-30), which will be held in November of this year, in the city of Belém, in Pará.

“President Lula’s participation will be an opportunity for the president to also talk about the organization of COP-30 and invite other countries (to the event),” said Lyrio.

The diplomat explained that the energy agenda at the G7 should address the diversification of sources, the financing of sustainable infrastructure and the integration of clean technologies into production chains — topics that will also be at the center of the discussions at COP-30.

Lula is attending the event at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently took office following early elections in the country. A bilateral meeting between the two heads of state is scheduled for the 17th, on the sidelines of the summit.

Brazil's participation is of strategic importance, both due to the relevance of the topics discussed and the international projection of the upcoming COP. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees Lula's presence as a valuable opportunity to reinforce Brazil's leadership in the global environmental and climate agenda, in addition to deepening dialogue with industrial powers and emerging economies on fair energy transition and sustainable development.

Alongside other countries in the Global South, Brazil is seeking to increase its voice in multilateral forums such as the G7, especially in debates that address climate finance, access to technologies and equity in the ecological transition. The expectation is that the meeting will also serve to articulate common commitments among developing countries in preparation for COP-30.

The central points of the discussions will also include the geopolitics of energy resources and the challenges posed by international instability, which directly affects investment flows in clean energy. In this context, the presence of US President Donald Trump adds a significant geopolitical component to the G7 multilateral negotiations.

Brazil, according to government advisors, intends to reaffirm its position in defense of inclusive environmental governance, which takes into account the different levels of development of countries and recognizes the historical efforts of Southern nations in environmental preservation.

By positioning itself as host of the next major climate conference, the country seeks to demonstrate its capacity for leadership and diplomatic articulation amid a fragmented and polarized global scenario.
