The proposal envisages the withdrawal of Ukrainian and Russian forces from the current front line

The proposal is based on the experience of demilitarization between North and South Korea, with the presence of an international mission

Ukrainian negotiator Mihajlo Podoljak said today that Kiev accepted a key element in the negotiations with the USA and Russia, that is, that it agreed to the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Donbass.

Mihajlo Podoljak in a statement for the French Mond stated that it is necessary to precisely define the scope of the withdrawal of weapons and the presence of international missions.

A zone under international supervision

"This is a logical format for ending the conflict, with the painful fact that part of the territory will remain under de facto Russian occupation," said Podoljak.

The Ukrainian negotiator stated that third parties would be tasked with monitoring the agreement, monitoring troop movements and respecting the separation line. This proposal, which was supported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, envisages the withdrawal of both Ukrainian and Russian forces from the current front line.

The model, as pointed out, is partially based on the experience of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. According to the Ukrainian interpretation, the demilitarized zone would include both sides of the dividing line in Donbass. The zone would be under international supervision, including the eventual presence of the US, in order to prevent further Russian aggression.

Russia to participate in reconstruction

Zelenski repeated that he has neither a"legal" nor a "moral" mandate to renounce Ukrainian territory and announced that any solution would have to be confirmed by elections or a referendum.

The document forwarded to the US contains three parts- the end of the war, the post-war European security architecture and the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Podoljak stressed that Russia must participate financially in the reconstruction in order to ensure a long-term deterrent effect.

The proposal is included in the revised American peace plan that Zelensky forwarded to US President Donald Trump, and in the drafting of which French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz participated.
