Russian drones have flown over Poland, according to the Polish military.

Now the country has invoked NATO's Article Four – for the eighth time in the alliance's history.

"This is the first time Russian drones have been shot down over the territory of a NATO country," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told the BBC.

During the night, NATO country Poland and several allies sent fighter jets after receiving reports of Russian drones.

According to the BBC, the alarm came in connection with Russian attacks on regions in the western parts of Ukraine, which border Poland.

At 04:00, Swedish time, the military confirmed on X that the country's airspace had been"repeatedly violated by drone-like objects". According to the military themselves, Polish and Dutch forces were used to shoot down the drones. Residents in several areas were urged to stay indoors.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirms the operation, claiming that it involves a “huge number” of Russian drones.

"The drones that posed a direct threat were shot down. I am in constant communication with the NATO Secretary General and our allies," Tusk writes on X.

Airports closed

The Polish military calls the Russian drones an “unprecedented violation.”

"This is an act of aggression that poses a real threat to the security of our citizens," they write on X.

According to Polsat News, one of the Russian drones crashed into a residential building in the town of Wyryki after being shot down. No one was injured, according to local authorities.

Four major airports, including the one in Warsaw, were closed on Wednesday morning due to"unplanned military activity," reports CNN.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed to the channel that he has been informed of the incident.

According to the Reuters news agency, between six and ten Russian drones have reached Polish territory.

Blitzkrieg calls NATO for meeting

Military expert Joakim Paasikivi says in an interview on P1 Morgon that it is likely a deliberate provocation from Russia.

– It's hard to see how more drones would fly lost when they haven't done it before in this way, he says.

According to Paasikivi, the drones could be a test of NATO's ability to respond.

– The unpleasant possibility is also that Russia now sees itself cornered and escalates. That several barriers will be loosened, he says.

On Wednesday morning, Poland announced that it would invoke NATO's Article Four in connection with the incident.

The NATO article means that member states must gather for urgent consultations if a member feels that their territorial integrity and security is threatened.

This will be the eighth time in NATO's history that Article Four has been invoked.

Russian media: “West wants to wake up Trump”

Neither the Russian Defense Ministry nor the Kremlin have commented on the incident in Poland.

Russian state news agency Ria Novosti writes that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk states that Russian drones have been shot down over Poland. But the news agency then denies that there is any evidence to support the claim.

The newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda goes a step further and claims that the Western information is an influence operation. There is no evidence that the drones come from Russia, yet Western media claims so. The goal is to influence Trump, writes propagandist Aleksandr Kots, adding:

– The Europeans have figured out how to influence Trump and wrest him from Putin's spell. The Russians are attacking! Europe is in danger! Donald, wake up!

At the same time, Kots does not hesitate to end the article with a wish for a real Russian attack on Poland:

– It would be good if we really attacked Rzeszow. Just like Israel attacked Doha.

Kristersson: "Gives our full support"

The incident has met with strong reactions, especially in Europe. EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas calls Russia's actions a clear escalation.

"Last night in Poland we saw Russia's most serious violation of European airspace since the war began," she writes on X.

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also condemns the incident.

"Russia's violations of Polish airspace tonight are unacceptable. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine poses a threat to the security of all of Europe. Poland has every right to preserve its airspace. We give our full support to Poland, as a NATO ally and EU member. Sweden and Poland stand united in our support for Ukraine," he writes in a post on X.
