Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Ukraine, reported that a five-story building had collapsed in the missile attack and that a fire had also been reported. Timur Tkachenko, the head of the Kiev military administration, reported that the Russians had attacked more than twenty areas, including a kindergarten that had caught fire.
Ukrainian emergency services have confirmed the death of 18 people. Four children were also killed in the attack, they added. One of the children killed was just 2 years old, Sky News reports.
Rescue operations are currently underway around the collapsed building to find any additional injured people who may be trapped under the rubble.
A Kiev resident captured the moments after the missile attack. We show the immediate aftermath of the strike:
Attacks on Kiev show Russia is not interested in peace
– said the Czech Foreign Minister.
"Russian missiles hit several buildings, including the EU delegation building. Shame on the aggressor! We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The Czech Republic remains firmly committed to Ukraine," said Minister Jan Lipavsky, according to a report by The Guardian .
Ursula von der Leyen flew into a rage, then scolded Donald Trump
Most European leaders immediately stood by Ukraine, including French President Emmanuel Macron , who condemned Russia's"terror and barbarity."
“Russian attacks on Kiev cannot remain without consequences,” said the German Foreign Minister. Johann Wadephul told reporters only that Berlin was considering further responses and that any measures would be taken jointly with the EU.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz bluntly stated that Russia had “once again shown its true face.”
The fact that the EU mission has now come under fire is a testament to the growing cruelty of the Russian regime
– he said.
As it later turned out, Russia's nighttime attack also targeted an EU office, as reported by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission."Within twenty seconds, two missiles hit fifty meters from the delegation," she said.
Von der Leyen also revealed that she had spoken to Donald Trump after the “massive attack” in Kiev. She did not say what the US president, who has not yet commented on their conversation, told her.
"Putin must somehow be brought to the negotiating table. And we must ensure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine," he set out as the most important goals.
Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, confirmed that the EU had"summoned the Russian ambassador to Brussels" to protest the attack.
The British have their glass full.
The British Foreign Office also summoned the Russian ambassador over the large-scale attack that “severely damaged” the UK embassy in Kiev.
The ministry later issued a statement saying that after the recent attacks,"Russia must put an end to senseless killings."
“The UK condemns these outrageous attacks in the strongest possible terms. Russia’s increasing military actions against Ukrainian civilians and cities, including Kyiv, represent an escalation of the war and further undermine the prospects for peace. We have made this clear to them,” a Foreign Office spokesperson said.
Moscow does not stop
Russia remains interested in peace talks, but will continue its"special military operation," the Kremlin indicated on Thursday afternoon.
"Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian military infrastructure," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Reuters and AFP.
Peskov has repeatedly claimed – without evidence – that Russia does not intentionally attack civilians.
