The World's Current Take

Critical of US Action

Neutral/Factual Reporting

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Americans carried out a successful bombing raid on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz. The authorities in Tehran announced retaliatory actions.

Interia contacted Bartłomiej Malczyk from the Theresian Military Academy in Austria with a request to assess these declarations. - Iran does not have the technology to attack the continental part of the United States - our interlocutor said, adding that"retaliation may occur", but through"proxy actors".

Iran: Will Tehran Retaliate Against the US? Expert Points to"Proxy Actors"

Malczyk listed the so-called proxy actors - these are terrorist organizations operating in the Middle East  - including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. - The possibilities of striking the US military infrastructure (in the Middle East - ed.) are large. The mere closure of the Strait of Hormuz  would be a kind of retaliation - he added.

Let us recall that about 20 percent of the world's daily demand for crude oil flows through the said strait. The Iranian parliament has agreed to close it, but the final decision will be made by the Supreme National Security Council of Iran.

- I am not convinced how effective Iran would be in enforcing such a blockade - noted Bartłomiej Malczyk.

The expert pointed out a possible  economic crisis, which"in some respects would be to the advantage of the US". - The higher price of oil is to some extent beneficial to Americans, because they extract it themselves. However, average citizens would feel it much more - he emphasized.

We asked our interlocutor about Russia's role in the current tense international situation. Let us recall that the Iranian Foreign Minister announced his Monday visit to Moscow, where he will hold"serious consultations" with Vladimir Putin.

- The Russians can always, as before, transfer some technology or sell something with a quick delivery date - said Malczyk.

To better understand the situation, it is worth recalling that approximately 2-3 million of Israel's residents come from post-Soviet countries. - We have to take into account that Israel is a largely Russian-speaking country, not Iran - the expert pointed out.
