The Tomorrowland Main Stage was completely destroyed by a massive fire, but there were no injuries. The fire started last night around 6 p.m. The cause of the fire is still unclear. The festival is currently being investigated for rescheduling the event starting tomorrow.
When the fire broke out, no festival-goers were yet present at the Tomorrowland site in Boom. However, the organizers were busy preparing for the festival, meaning around 1,000 employees were on the site.
No injuries were reported, but the property damage is extensive: the Mainstage, Tomorrowland's crown jewel, was completely destroyed. Years of work were lost in just an hour. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
The prosecutor's office is opening an investigation into accidental arson and a fire expert must determine the cause of the fire.
Camping opens today
The festival will go ahead as planned, spokesperson Debby Wilmsen stated firmly last night during a press conference."We're continuing with the preparations. We're pumping ourselves up, because the festival is going ahead, albeit without the main stage. Tomorrow we'll already be welcoming 38,000 people to Dreamville, our festival's campsite," she assured us at the time.
She reiterated that last message this morning on VRT Radio 1 and Studio Brussel."The 38,000 festival-goers coming to Dreamville today won't notice anything. Our site, Dreamville, is in a different location than the Schorre." The campsite is in Rumst, while the festival itself is taking place in the Schorre in Boom.
Visitors will be welcomed there, they'll be able to pitch their tents, and the bars will be open, Wilmsen assures. The planned activities will also continue in Brussels, where festivalgoers are staying in hotels, Wilmsen adds.
What about the festival itself?
The organizers are less definitive this morning about the festival itself. On the festival grounds, they will work with security services and government officials to determine what they can do tomorrow.
According to Debby Wilmsen, it's still too early to say how Tomorrowland will open tomorrow."But more information will definitely follow later in the day," she says. She advises visitors to follow Tomorrowland's official communication channels and not to believe any rumors that have been circulating on social media since yesterday.
"It's too early to say exactly what we'll be able to do at the Schorre itself, but we'll have to be creative. But the fire department and police have the final say when it comes to safety, and we always listen to them."
Consultation with security services and governments
This morning at 9:00 AM, there will be an initial meeting to discuss the festival's future. This afternoon at 12:30 PM, there will be a safety meeting, also attended by the mayors of Rumst and Boom.
The possibilities will be explored there, and an alternative for the Main Stage will also be discussed. According to Jurgen Callaerts (N-VA), the mayor of Rumst,"canceling the festival completely is the last thing we want to do."
200,000 festival-goers are expected at Tomorrowland: this coming weekend, and the following weekend, everything will be repeated, with another 200,000 festival-goers.
Showpiece of the festival
The Mainstage, which burned down completely yesterday, is traditionally Tomorrowland's crown jewel. Every year, the decor is a highly anticipated addition. This year, the stage was supposed to embody the festival's theme:"the world of Orbyz." The creative team began developing the stage and theme back in 2023.

"We'll see what it will bring without the main stage," says Gitte Van Hoyweghen

This year's stage was 45 metres high by 160 metres wide, and included 2,120 atmospheric elements, including 65 water fountains and 2 waterfalls.
To achieve this, many materials are used:
The set was prepared in a studio in Schelle, under the creative direction of Christophe Van den Branden. At the end of May, it was moved to the festival site in Boom.
After the Belgian edition of the festival, the decor will be packed up and shipped to Brazil, so that it can be reused there for Tomorrowland Brazil.

"Heartbreaking," say DJs
Some 850 artists were scheduled to take the stage this year, including several Belgians."I just saw it on the news. This is heartbreaking," says Belgian techno DJ Charlotte De Witte.
Dimitri Vegas, a regular at home, also expressed his support on Instagram. His wife, Anouk Matton, who is also a DJ, said she was"in complete shock."
