Israeli Strikes on Iran

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites which took place early on Sunday morning (local time) by calling them “irresponsible.”

US President Donald Trump announced the strikes soon after they took place and threatened more should Iran retaliate. Tehran has vowed to retaliate without further elaboration.

Russian media RIA Novosti, citing the foreign ministry, said in a Telegram update that the Kremlin has condemned the strike by calling it “an irresponsible decision to subject the territory of a sovereign state to missile and bomb strikes,” adding that it “grossly violates international law.”

In a separate update, RIA Novosti reported that Moscow is calling for de-escalation, describing it as “alarming” that the attacks were carried out by a member of the UN Security Council.

Both Russia and the US are permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, that is still ongoing, with one of its most recent attacks on Kyiv using hundreds of drones and missiles killing at least 28 – including a US citizen – and injuring dozens more.

Russia, a key ally of Iran that signed a partnership treaty with Tehran earlier this year, previously warned Washington against military intervention in Iran but stopped short of vowing direct support for Iran should it come under attack.

Following the attack, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said Israel and Iran should both give up their nuclear arsenals, Russian state media TASS reported, citing Medvedev’s social media page.
