On Wednesday, it was announced that Russia and the United States have secretly discussed a plan to end the war.

On Saturday, European leaders said they were ready to get involved to ensure a lasting future peace in Ukraine. But it emerged that they were also highly critical of parts of the agreement.

On Sunday afternoon, there are leaks of what is supposed to be Europe's counter-proposal to Trump's 28 points.

According to the Reuters news agency, which claims to have seen a document, European leaders are said to have proposed the following:

Shouldn't have troops in Ukraine

  • Ukraine will receive a security guarantee from the United States that mirrors NATO's Article 5. It states that an attack on one NATO country is an attack on all NATO countries.
  • Ukraine's military forces will be limited to 800,000 people.
  • Ukraine will hold elections as soon as a peace treaty is signed.
  • NATO fighter jets will be stationed in Poland.
  • Ukraine can join NATO if NATO member states agree to this.
  • Ukraine commits not to regain its occupied sovereign territories by military means, negotiations on land swaps will start from the front line.
  • Ukraine will be compensated financially, including through Russian funds that will remain frozen until Russia compensates for the damage it has caused Ukraine.
  • NATO agrees not to have troops under NATO command permanently stationed in Ukraine.

These are the differences

The points of the European leaders differ from several of Trump's proposals in several areas.

For example, Trump is demanding that the Ukrainian army be cut by 200,000 more people than the proposal from Europe.

Claims the conversations are productive

The leaks from the document came at the same time that US officials, according to Reuters, are describing the talks between the US and Ukraine as productive and even conclusive in some areas.

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday morning, US President Donald Trump went on a tirade about the war in Ukraine, writing that it is a war that should never have happened.

The move came as his peace plan is being discussed. The leadership in Ukraine has not shown gratitude for America's peace efforts, Trump believes.

He also pointed the finger at European leaders.
