247 - The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), has proposed suspension of up to six months from office for five deputies. Three of them are members of Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) party. The decision was announced amid the unrest this week. The former president's allies attempted to prevent the House session from starting, a way to pressure the Legislature to vote on possible amnesties for the far-right politician and Bolsonaro supporters involved in coup plots.
The five lawmakers facing impeachment are Zé Trovão (PL-SC), Júlia Zanatta (PL-SC), Marcos Pollon (PL-MS), Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS), and Camila Jara (PT-MS). Bolsonaro supporters have been accused of attempting to obstruct parliamentary proceedings. In the case of the Workers' Party member, the decision was the result of a request from the PL. The congresswoman is being accused of assaulting Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG).
In the coming days, the Ethics Committee will review the recommendations made by the Speaker of the House. The General Secretariat of the Board stated that complaints about conduct during the riot were forwarded to the Parliamentary Oversight Board.
As for Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right politician is a defendant in the coup plot investigation, is under house arrest, and is serving precautionary measures. Combined, his sentences exceed 40 years in prison.
