Two high-speed passenger trains collided on Monday in Slovakia, near Jablonov nad Turnou, near Rožňov, a few kilometers from the Hungarian border. Several people were injured in the accident, two of whom are in critical condition, the TASR news agency reported, citing firefighters and ambulances, MTI reports. The exact number of passengers has not yet been announced.

The news portal Teraz reports that nine people suffered moderate and serious injuries, while ambulances also registered at least 20 minor injuries.

The trains depart shortly after ten o'clock in the morning.

– the Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) announced, adding that the cause of the accident is uncertain. After the collision, one train remained on the tracks, while the other derailed.

According to the emergency services dispatch center, six units of the central emergency service and three rescue helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

Slovak Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok announced at a press conference on the matter that two people are in critical condition and three passengers are trapped in the train, and there is no information about their condition yet, writes Teraz. According to the minister, the train accident may have been caused by human error, as one of the train drivers could not have given priority to the other.

"I would not like to speculate about the causes of the accident at this time, but according to initial information, the traffic accident was not caused by a system error, but by a human factor. One of the train drivers probably made a mistake and probably did not give way, but this information has not yet been confirmed," said the Minister of the Interior, adding that he, the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Health are on their way to the scene of the accident.

Robert Fico wrote on his social media page that he hoped that there would be no casualties in the train accident and wished a speedy recovery to all injured. The prime minister indicated that he was in direct contact with Transport Minister Jozef Raz and Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, who are on their way to the scene of the tragedy. He also announced that the cause of the accident would be thoroughly investigated.

The Air Transport Europe air rescue service reported shortly after noon that three rescue helicopters had arrived at the scene of the accident. “In view of the number of injured people, the Košice rescue helicopter is currently returning to the scene of the accident for the second time. The air rescuers are providing emergency medical care on site and ensuring the transport of more seriously injured patients to hospitals,” the air rescue service said, Teraz reports.

One of the train drivers was subjected to a breathalyzer and drug test at the scene, the results of which were negative. The driver of the other train was taken to hospital by ambulance helicopter, but he will also be tested, the Kosovo Regional Police Department announced on its social media page.
