The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, warned on Wednesday that countries such as Brazil, China and India could face severe sanctions if they continue to trade with Russia.
Rutte made the statement during a meeting with senators in the US Congress, a day after President Donald Trump announced new arms shipments to Ukraine and threatened to impose secondary tariffs of 100% on buyers of Russian exports if a peace deal is not signed within 50 days.
Regarding the sending longer-range weapons to Ukraine, Rutte clarified that the details have not yet been discussed in detail but are being worked on.
Yesterday, US President Donald Trump announced a new, tougher line against Russia, while promising to send missiles and other weapons systems to Kiev, giving Moscow a 50-day deadline for a ceasefire agreement.
Speaking from the Oval Office, alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said he was disappointed with Russian President Vladimir Putin."I don't want to say he's a murderer, but he's a tough guy," Trump said, adding that several of his predecessors had also been disappointed with the Russian president.
The decision to send American weapons to Ukraine marks a geopolitical shift for Trump, who until recently was trying to convince Putin to agree to a ceasefire agreement. The plan foresees that the cost of the armaments will be covered by NATO countries.
