(Seoul = Yonhap News) The local Khmer Times reported on the arrests of Chinese nationals in a crackdown operation carried out in Kampot Province in August by the Cambodian joint task force, which is at war with online scam criminal organizations. The three Chinese nationals were brought to trial on murder charges by local prosecutors who investigated the case of a Korean college student who died after being tortured in Cambodia last August. According to Cambodia's state-run AKP News Agency on the 11th (local time), the Kampot Provincial Prosecutor's Office indicted three Chinese nationals in their 30s and 40s, including Mr. A (35), on charges of murder and fraud. They are accused of murdering Mr. B, a Korean college student in his 20s, near Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province, Cambodia last August. 2025.10.12 [Screenshot from the Khmer Times website. (Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jun-tae = Police are pushing for the repatriation of all citizens detained in Cambodia within a month. They will also increase the number of police officers stationed there by two.

The National Police Agency announced this plan on the 14th, saying,"We will respond with all our might to protect citizens threatened by Cambodian criminal organizations."

Police plan to initially bring back all 63 citizens detained locally within a month. Among them, they will attempt to repatriate those on Interpol's red notices.

Two additional police liaison officers will be dispatched to the Cambodian embassy. This follows concerns that the current staff of one resident officer and two liaison officers is inadequate.

The bilateral meeting between the deputy chiefs of police of Korea and Cambodia for the establishment of a 'Korean Desk' in Cambodia will also be held earlier than originally scheduled on the 23rd, to the 20th.

Police said the meeting was brought forward by three days,"given the significant increase in crimes targeting Koreans."

In addition, Incheon International Airport has decided to deploy police officers forward to the departure gates. They will be stationed right in front of the aircraft boarding gates, ensuring an all-out crackdown until just before departure.

The purpose is to inform job seekers who leave the country in the name of employment and young people involved in phishing crimes about the reality of crime in Cambodia and to raise awareness.

The National Investigation Headquarters operates a 'Comprehensive Response Team to Crimes Targeting Koreans in Cambodia' headed by the Director of Investigation Planning and Coordination.

The response team will utilize crime intelligence teams across the country to gather intelligence on kidnappings and lures to Cambodia as a top priority, monitor online posts that induce people to leave the country, and investigate whether domestic organized crime is involved.

We will also launch a comprehensive investigation into crimes targeting Koreans occurring in Cambodia.

As of the end of August, there were 255 cases reported only to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs but not to the police, and the plan is to investigate all of them.

The plan is to cross-analyze future police-received cases and Ministry of Foreign Affairs-reported cases on a daily basis to ensure that no citizen at risk is left out of the safety net.
