Eduardo Bolsonaro renews threats against Brazil and says the US government may expand sanctions

Monday, August 11

247 - Federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) stated that the United States government, led by President Donald Trump, is considering imposing new sanctions against Brazilian authorities, including ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), if the trial of his father, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), for attempted coup, is not concluded, reports the Financial Times.

According to the congressman, who has been leading a lobbying campaign in Washington, Trump is considering alternatives such as expanding the visa ban, adopting tariff measures, and even sanctioning family members of judges. Eduardo stated that"Trump still has the option of doubling down given the reaction of Alexandre de Moraes," the minister leading the case.

Diplomatic confrontation and measures already adopted

Tensions between Brazil and the United States have reached their most critical point in two centuries. The U.S. government had already raised tariffs on Brazilian products to 50% and banned eight Supreme Court justices from entering the United States, citing the Bolsonaro trial, the regulation of social media platforms, and trade issues.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes was targeted by Magnitsky-type sanctions, which freeze assets in the US and prohibit American citizens and companies from doing business with him. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused Moraes of"an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions, and politicized prosecutions."

Reactions in Brazil and abroad

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) called Washington's pressure "unacceptable" and reaffirmed that the trial will proceed as normal. Moraes, in turn, reinforced measures against Bolsonaro, imposing house arrest and prohibiting contact between father and son after concluding that both sought support from US authorities to interfere in the case.

While critics accuse him of acting against national interests and harming exports, Eduardo Bolsonaro claims he seeks to"save democracy" and asserts his willingness to face attacks from the left. He also plans trips to Europe to advocate for similar sanctions in the European Union, citing support from right-wing politicians such as André Ventura, leader of the Chega party in Portugal.
