A terrifying fire engulfed the main stage of the Tomorrowland festival on Wednesday, just two days before its opening in the Belgian city of Boom, according to event organizers and local media. The source of the flames is still unknown, but images posted on social media show the fire scorching the structure.
Videos initially released by witnesses of the fire showed the fire consuming the stage and a black cloud rising into the sky. Later images, also shared on social media, revealed the extent of what had happened: a stage completely scorched after being engulfed in flames.
The flames spread to a nearby house after it was hit by a firework, according to the residents themselves. During the fire, the device reached the ceiling and fell on our kitchen. Our skylight was completely melted, but everything is under control, residents said, according to local media outlet HLN. The couple extinguished the fire and were later assisted by firefighters.
The fire may have started due to a malfunction in a fireworks display while technicians were conducting tests ahead of next Friday's launch, according to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir. However, neither the organizers nor the emergency services have confirmed this.
Despite the devastation at the main stage, Dreamville – the official Tomorrowland campsite – will open this Thursday as planned, according to sources cited by HLN.
