Washington.- Billionaire Elon Musk, a former close ally of US President Donald Trump, whose government he recently left, announced on Saturday the creation of his own political movement, the"America Party."
"Today the Party of America is created," referring to the United States,"to give back" to the country "freedom," wrote the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX on his social network X.
Disappointed by the budget bill introduced by the president, whom he accuses of increasing the national debt, Musk had promised in recent days to create his own political movement if the bill were passed.
On Friday, July 4, coinciding with the commemoration of the United States Independence and after Congress approved Trump's project, Musk launched a survey on X about his idea of creating a new party.
"By a ratio of two to one, they have said yes to a new political party, and they shall have it!" he wrote this Saturday, after 65% of the approximately 1.2 million participants in the initiative answered"yes" to the question of whether they wanted the "Party of America" to see the light of day.
"When it comes to ruining our country through waste and corruption, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," Musk also said.
A former close ally of Trump, whose 2024 presidential campaign he helped finance, Musk had taken on the task of drastically cutting federal spending during the Republican administration. In May, the two billionaires stridently broke off their alliance.
Originally from South Africa, Musk will not be eligible to run in future US presidential elections, as candidates for the position must be born in the country.
