Zelensky's Perspective on US Support

Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to continue attacking Ukraine until the West accepts his peace terms, three unnamed sources close to the Kremlin said, according to Reuters. Putin has not been deterred by threats from US President Donald Trump and may expand his territorial claims as Russian forces advance in Ukraine, TASR reports.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction with Putin in recent days, and on Monday warned Russia that he would impose 100 percent secondary tariffs on its trading partners if it did not end the conflict in Ukraine within 50 days. Trump also announced new arms shipments to Ukraine.

Moscow takes Trump's threats seriously

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Moscow is taking Trump's new statements about the situation in Ukraine seriously and plans to analyze them.

But the Kremlin chief, according to sources, believes that the Russian economy and military are strong enough to withstand any further measures by the West.

The unnamed officials say Putin will not stop the war under Western pressure and believes Russia, which has survived the harshest Western sanctions, can withstand further economic hardship, including looming U.S. tariffs targeting Russian oil buyers. Putin, they say, views Moscow's goals as far more important than any economic losses.

Putin's peace conditions

"Putin believes that no one - not even the Americans - has seriously engaged with him on the details of peace in Ukraine and will continue to do so until he gets what he wants," Reuters quoted one source as saying, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.

Putin and Trump have spoken on the phone several times in recent months, while the US president's special envoy Steve Witkoff has visited Russia a few times. However, the Russian president believes that detailed discussions on the basis of a peace plan have not taken place, according to the same source.

Putin's conditions for peace include a legally binding commitment that NATO will not expand eastward, Ukraine's neutrality and limitation of its armed forces, protection of Russian-speaking populations and acceptance of Russia's territorial gains, the sources said.

Ukraine refuses concessions

According to previous statements by its President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine will never recognize Russia's sovereignty over the conquered Ukrainian territories and retains the sovereign right to decide whether to join NATO.

Russia currently controls nearly 19 percent of Ukraine's territory, including the occupied Crimean peninsula and Luhansk Oblast, and more than 70 percent of Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson Oblasts, according to Reuters. It has also captured parts of Kharkiv and Sumy Oblasts.

One source claimed that Trump has little influence over Putin, while also suggesting that even if Washington imposed tariffs on buyers of Russian oil, Moscow would still find a way to sell it on world markets.
